I first heard Two Little Boys by Rolf Harris back in the 1960s. I was in hospital and it was playing on hospital radio. I was in a ward full of really old people and at 17, it's not the best place to be. I thought nothing of the song at all, but noticed that an elderly lady who could not move was crying.
Years later, after having my own sons, | realised that perhaps the song reminded her of her children, or maybe she went through the war and thought about people she had lost. Or perhaps she thought about the actual words and how we would not let down anyone we truly cared for.
Just last week Rolf Harris was on radio 4 extra, yes it probably is for old gits like me, but I like hearing Tony Hancock again and all the old comedy radio and the plays they put on. Well Rofl Harris said when he first heard the song, which was sung to him by the chap who wrote it and sang it to him in a tenor voice, Rolf could only wonder what on earth he would say to him as he first thought it not that good.
Then came the bit where the boys have gone to war and was is wounded, and the other saves him. It makes me tingle even typing it, and reminds me that there are people in our life who we would do anything for, no matter what was asked of us, and we know they would do the same for us.
I think it is called trust!
